Apple extends AppleCare add-on time to a year in the US & Canada
Apple has informed retail and customer support to extend the period customers have after buying Apple hardware to add AppleCare to it from 60 days to one year, according toBloomberg.
AppleCare+ is an extended warranty service that people can pay extra for to cover their iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches against accidental damage. It makes the cost of repair much lower than if out of warranty.
It is this extended warranty that was always limited to a 60-day window after purchase to add on if not done when the product was bought. But now Apple has decided to give people a year to add the cover on, and it’s not the first time the company has toyed with the time allowed.
At the time of writing Apple had not updated its website to reflect the policy change, and it is thought to only apply to the US and Canada.
A memo seen by Bloomberg addressed to Apple staff said the change “gives customers another opportunity to protect their device and have access to all the AppleCare+ benefits,” and is only available if customers pay in full up front rather than in monthly instalments.
It is thought that anyone who has bought a device less than a year ago will be able to take advantage, but those people will have to have the device seen by an Apple retail worker to check it is not already damaged.
