Chuwi’s UBook X is an affordable Surface Pro 7 rival
Chinese company Chuwi has a reputation for solid budget laptops, so will hope it can replicate this success as it continues expanding into 2-in-1s.
The UBook X comes in a form factor we’ve become familiar with from Microsoft’s Surface line, with a 12in tablet and optional keyboard cover.
The screen itself is a 2160×1440 touchscreen, while Chuwi has made the shift to the 3:2 aspect ratio. This is considered to be closer to the dimensions of A4 paper, which should make for a more natural stylus experience. The HiPen H6 has the same 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity we see on many digital pens, and is available for£30.78/US$39.90.

In terms of performance, the UBook X is powered by Intel’s N4100 processor, which combines with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD on the only configuration available. Chuwi claims it can effectively balance performance, power consumption and battery life to “easily cope with the daily office and entertainment needs”, although it’s impossible to be sure without testing for ourselves.
The device is also well served by ports, with now-common USB-C and 3.5mm headphone jack joined by USB-A port, micro HDMI and a microSD card slots.
While its low price tag may invite comparisons with Microsoft’sSurface Go 2, the larger 12in screen makes it feel more like aSurface Pro 7rival.
One of the main frustrations with Surface 2-in-1s is that the keyboard cover is sold separately. However, if you buy the Chuwi UBook X before 8 August, the keyboard will be thrown in at no extra cost.
Of course, we can’t comment on the quality of this keyboard without trying it for ourselves, but it looks like great value for money.
All in all, the UBook X looks like a compelling budget alternative in the world of Windows convertibles. However, whether it can be considered among thebest tabletsaround remains to be seen.
You can buy the Chuwi UBook X now for£307.81/US$399. Looking for an Android-powered Chuwi tablet? Check out theHiPad X.
