Fast Charge ep. 38: Huawei Mate 40, Vivo enters Europe & RIP Quibi

And that’s it, the last massive phone launch of 2020 (we hope): the Huawei Mate 40 series. This week has also seen Vivo make its long-awaited European launch, along with the not-really-unexpected demise of mobile streaming service Quibi.

TheMate 40 seriesis the latest trio of flagships from Huawei, packing massive camera specs and a new 5nm chipset to make these some of the best-specced phones around. Of course, that only counts for so much when we know they won’t support Google.

There are no such problems for Chinese rival Vivo, which has finallylaunched in Europethis week with theVivo X51– really a re-brandedX50 Pro– and a trio of budget Y-series phones. Can it replicate the success of Xiaomi and Oppo in western Europe?

And while Vivo is moving up,Quibiis moving decidedly down. The beleaguered mobile-only TV & moviestreaming platformhas officially kicked the bucket after barely six months, making it one of the highest profile failures in recent Hollywood history. Is it a Covid casualty, or was it always doomed to fail?
