Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is a free co-op mode coming this autumn
Ghost of Tsushima is getting an online co-op mode called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. The new multiplayer option arrives some time this autumn, and best of all it’s completely free if you own the base game.
“Legends is an entirely new experience,”the PlayStation blog explains, which “focuses on four warriors who have been built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima.”
That means you won’t be playing as Jin, the protagonist ofGhost of Tsushima’s single-player mode, but will instead control one of the four mythic warriors detailed in the game’s Mythic Tale side quests, in a new setting that leans more heavily on the magical elements teased in the base game.
The four characters are split into archetypes – Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, and Assassin – each of which comes with unique gear and abilities. It sounds like each will have a tighter focus on specific elements of Jin’s toolkit, but hopefully with a few new tricks to play around with too.
Unlike the main game, the co-op experience won’t be an open world exploration. Instead, there are a few different gameplay modes available.
Story missions work with two players, and developer Sucker Punch says the escalating difficulty will build on the combat from the main game, but feature “new magical twists that often require careful synchronization with your partner.”
Survival missions support up to four players, and sound like more typical wave-based combat, though there is at least the promise of “new Oni enemies with supernatural abilities.”
Complete all of that and you’ll be able to take part in the four-player Raid, which the blog says will be added to the game some time after launch – so that’s a free content update to this free content update, in case you can’t keep track.
Legends is co-op only – there’s no way to play solo – and as a result you’ll need aPlayStation Plus subscriptionto play. That might sting a little for non-subscribers, but since the whole package is free for people who already ownGhost of Tsushimait’s really hard to complain too much.
