How to redirect email to a new address

If you’ve decided to change your email address but are worried that some messages won’t be able to reach you at the new one, there’s always the option to set up a forwarding service from the old address. This should automatically send the emails that arrive there onto your new one.

Here we’ll explain how to redirect email to a new email address on Gmail, Outlook and iCloud Mail.

The method for setting up forwarding is practically the same on all of these services, so if your email provider isn’t on the list, try following the same steps and you should be successful, unless your old provider simply doesn’t support forwarding.

How to set up email forwarding in Gmail

When you want to switch email addresses, there’s no need to shut down or delete your old one as it could still come in handy in the future. But, if you want to have your messages sent to your new address, here’s how to configure Gmail to post them to you automatically.

Go to your web browser and log into Gmail. In the upper right-corner you’ll see the Settings icon (looks like a gear cog), so click this and selectShow all settingsfrom the menu that appears.

Click the tab markedForwarding and POP/IMAP, then in the main pane you’ll see theForwardingsection at the top. You have two options here: you can either have all your emails redirected to the new address or you can set up a filter that will forward certain ones that meet your criteria. To set up the latter, click thecreating a filter!option and enter the details you want Gmail to use when selecting emails to forward.

Now, click theAdd a forwarding addressbutton, enter your new email address, and Gmail will automatically begin sending any messages that arrive directly to your new account.

Click this, click theEnable Forwardingbox, then enter your new email address and clickSave.
