HQ Trivia app shuts down as company folds

HQ Trivia, a quiz app that once took the world by storm by running live quizzes for cash prizes, is officially dead after parent company HQ shuttered its doors.

HQ laid off its 25 staff, confirmed bya note acquired by CNN reporter Kerry Flynnin which CEO and founder Rus Yusupov claimed a last minute acquisition deal fell through. HQ’s co-founder Colin Kroll died of an accidental drug overdose in 2018.

The app broadcast one final competitive round on 16 February with both hosts drunkenly yelling and swearing at each other and the chat feed, as reported by TechCrunch. Former US host of HQ Trivia and its undeniable best asset Scott Rogowsky tweeted a harsh assessment of HQ’s demise:

HQ didn’t die of natural causes. It was poisoned with a lethal cocktail of incompetence, arrogance, short-sightedness & sociopathic delusion. Saddened to see it finally succumb; sadder still for the good & talented staff abruptly left in the lurch after being gaslit and lied to.

Rogowsky used his fame to jump ship early and now has a job as a broadcaster for Major League Baseball.

HQ Trivia launched in October 2017 and at its peakbrought in 2.3 million concurrent players.
