Netflix to make a live-action Assassin’s Creed series

Netflix and Ubisoft have joined forces to create a brand new live-action Assassin’s Creed series. The announcement on Twitter gave a short teaser trailer for the show, but no details were given on the plot or setting.

Mythic Quest’s Jason Altman and Ubisoft’s TV boss Danielle Kreinik will both serve as executive producers on the series – no casting details have been revealed. It joins other upcoming video game adaptations on the platform, includingCyberpunk: EdgerunnersandThe Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

Considering this is live-action, people are speculating whether it will adapt the story of one of the games/source material (as The Witcher has done), or if it will tell a brand-new story that fits in the overall universe.

If the company does the former, the most robust story within the game line-up is that of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed Revelations. These games are set during the Italian Renaissance – an interesting and iconic part of history that features renown figures such as Leonardo Da Vinci.

Of course, all the games also have a modern-day story line interwoven with the historical one. In the early games, the main character was Desmond Miles, and in later titles it is Layla Hassan. Again, it will be intriguing to see if the series will explore the animus, ancestors and ‘those who came before’, or if a simple period setting is easier.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the team doesn’t deviate as far away from the games as Michael Fassbender’s Assassin’s Creed movie did – which changed up the design and concept of the animus to a huge robotic arm and didn’t touch on hardly any of the lore that was established within the games.

The announcement comes just before the release ofAssassin’s Creed Valhalla, the twelfth major game within the franchise and the first one to release on the next-gen consoles, thePlayStation 5andXbox Series X.

If you’ve not yet signed up for Netflix, you can do soon the websitewith plans starting from £5.99/$8.99 per month. You can read more about theAssassin’s Creed series here.
