Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2: Everything we know
With famous faces from both the Rebellion and the Dark Side, Obi-Wan Kenobi has proven to be a smash hit with Star Wars fans.
The Obi-Wan show joinsThe Mandalorian, theseventh series of Clone Wars, andthe Rogue One prequel Andoramong the Star Wars content that’sexclusive to Disney+. All episodes in the first season have now aired, but what about the future of the show?
Here’s what we know so far.
Will there be a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Whilst Obi-Wan Kenobi had the biggest debut of any series on Disney+ so far, it is (like many other series) intended to be a standalone series.
Writer Joby Harold toldDen of Geek magazinethat “Looking at this limited series as the first part of anything, or as interconnected to anything beyond the canon and mythology that preexists, was less interesting than just looking at it as a complete story.”
Of course, things can change. Between Obi-Wan finishing and Episode IV beginning, there is still time – and perhaps another untold story of the legendary Jedi to be told.
Star Ewan McGregor hasexpressed interestin doing more, should the offer be on the table: “[The show] does do what I wanted it to do in terms of bridging a story between 3 and 4 and bringing me closer to Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan in A New Hope… I would like to make another one.”
He has reiterated this opinion in other interviews with theRadio TimesandGQ.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also said the following toEntertainment Tonight: “we did set out to do that as a limited series. But I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us.”
Alternatively, Obi-Wan’s story may continue in other projects, such as another spin-off series or an upcoming film.
Obi-Wan Kenobi season finale explained
Spoilers for the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi below
Obi-Wan Kenobi seemed to tie up most of the loose ends, all things considered. By the end of the finale, Obi-Wan was on Tatooine and reunited with the Force ghost of his former master, Qui-Gon. He even had the time to briefly introduced himself to Luke (with the iconic ‘Hello there!’ line, no less).
Leia was back on Alderaan, safe with the Organa family, and Darth Vader was told by his master, Palpatine, to leave Obi-Wan behind and focus on other matters.
Obi-Wan did have the opportunity to kill Darth Vader during their battle in the finale, but that isn’t what he believed was right as a Jedi. He showed mercy, and that same way of thinking will one day be passed on to Luke Skywalker as well.
Reva has a story potentially waiting to be told, after abandoning her lightsaber and leaving the Empire behind. But where will she go next? Could she be a potential side character in another upcoming spinoff?
We may also get to see Leia’s growth as a character, and the part she played in creating the Rebel Alliance. If Obi-Wan Kenobi does return, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a time jump, so Leia can age up slightly.
