OnePlus folding phone isn’t coming soon

2020 looks like it will be the year of the folding phone, but OnePlus won’t be launching one any time soon.

You might think a challenger company like OnePlus would want to take on the big names at a folding screen smartphone. TheMotorola Razrand rumouredGalaxy Z Flipare on the way soon and we’re sure plenty of other foldable phones will arrive this year.

However, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, has said there is no “significant advantage or value” to be had at moment due to the tech’s limitations.

Speaking via an interpreter, Lau said to theVergecast“Foldable is actually an example of something that we have looked into but not pursued. That’s because, in looking into the application of what’s currently available for foldable screen technology, we haven’t found that the significant advantage or value that’s brought that isn’t outweighed by the shortcomings or the disadvantages of the current state of the technology.”

Lau added that current devices with folding screens have creases or or issues and wouldn’t be happy to launch a OnePlus device with this tech unless it is “really crisp and not impact the screen where the fold happens.”

The firm appreciates the different approach of the Razr, which folds vertically rather than horizontally like theGalaxy Fold, but this doesn’t solve the issue enough for Lau. Another issue may be that folding phones are extrememly expensive and OnePlus is known for offering good value.

There might be quite a wait for a OnePlus folding phone then but what we do know is that the firm will be jumping to a120Hz refresh rate this year, likely for theOnePlus 8.
