Oppo launches 4G Reno 3 Pro model in India

Oppo has launched its latest Reno 3 Pro handset in India as a 4G device, following the China launch of the same model that supports 5G. Confusingly, the two models are actually quite different in specs and features despite having the same price.

The 6.5in Reno 3 Pro is priced from INR 29,990, which converts to a more than reasonable £324 at the time of writing. For a phone with the below specs, that is not a bad price at all.

#OPPOReno3Prois equipped with the World’s First 44MP#DualPunchHoleCamera, a 64MP Quad Camera set-up to deliver clarity in every shot. To top all, it features a 4025mAh Battery, MTK P95 Processor and the Hidden Fingerprint Unlock 3.0. Know more:https://t.co/Umdka75tnLpic.twitter.com/EMre0YveJ7

The Chinese 5G Reno 3 Pro only has a single front facing camera and runs the Snapdragon 765G. The Indian 4G model has two front cameras and runs the Mediatek HelioP95. Two different phones with the same product name. Welcome to consumer tech in 2020.

Oppo’s claim that the Indian phone has the world’s first 44Mp dual punch hole camera is not the most exciting world first, or indeed one that anyone was waiting with bated breath for. It means the phone’s design is reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, though the cut out is on the left on the Reno 3 Pro.

The Reno line is already on its third iteration for Oppo despite the fact the original Reno was only launched in April of 2019. Since then, it has brought out a fair few phones in the Reno, Reno 2 and now Reno 3 branding, making the line up pretty confusing.

Not all phones are available in all regions, meaning Oppo can vary the specs between the devices quite wildly to suit the market. Launching a cheaper 4G Reno 3 Pro to the Indian market where it will be considered more or less a flagship phone is quite canny, and undercuts the price of popular rival high-end phones like OnePlus that are gaining in popularity in India.

That said, Oppo and OnePlus are both owned by Chinese company BBK so while there may be genuine competition between the brands, the big dogs in charge won’t mind who sells more phones.
