Premier League on Sky will come with optional FIFA game crowd noise

Whenthe Premier League returnson 17 June there will be one thing missing: a physical crowd. To combat the eerie quiet of empty football stadia, Sky Sports has announced that it is working with FIFA to bring optional crowd sounds part lifted from the FIFA football video games.

In a press release Sky Sports said that EA Sports had worked to make team-specific, bespoke chants and crowd sounds that “replicate the vibrant atmosphere of Premier League clashes, so fans don’t miss out on the noise that goes with the action,” depending on the teams you’re watching and what is happening in the game, just like on FIFA.

It’s the kind of thing that looks completely mad and dystopian without the context of coronavirus. Premier League football is returning, but the health situation in the UK is such that it’s not safe for large crowds to gather under government ruling.

Sky Sports managing director Robert Webster said, “We want Sky Sports viewers to still feel it all and have the best possible viewing experience – even if they can’t be in the stadiums or watch with their family and friends,” remembering that even gathering in pubs and in large groups at home to watch the matches is technically against current rules.

If this all sounds too weird then you’ll be able to turn off the chants and listen in to what footballers and their managers actually shout at one another during matches and how rude they are to the referee. If you’re watching the matches not on Sky then that’s your only option.
