Rian Johnson says Apple doesn’t let bad guys in films use iPhones
The Hollywood director Rian Johnson has said that Apple doesn’t allow “bad guys” to use iPhones on camera in movies.
In a video interview withVanity Fairdiscussing a scene from his film Knives Out, he said Apple “lets you use iPhones in movies but […] bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.” Jamie-Lee Curtis is seen using an iPhone in the scene he is breaking down, while the film also saw Michael Shannon’s character use an Apple Watch.
Johnson joked that “every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now!”

Given Johnson’s other recent film was Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he wouldn’t have had this issue in a galaxy far, far away.
Apple products feature in many films and TV series, not least to an almostcomic level in the Apple-funded The Morning Show. It’s not clear when Apple insisted on negatively persuaded characters not being associated with iPhones but keep an eye out next time you go to the cinema. Or forget this fact in case it ruins a plot for you.
As Engadget pointed out, Frank Underwood from House of Cards used an iPhone from 2013 onwards and he was as bad as they come.
