Sony opens registration for pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 in the US
Sony has openedregistration for pre-ordersfor thePlayStation 5in the US, but the system seems set up to disappoint many.
The console still doesn’t have a release date or price, but Sony is letting existing PlayStation customers with PlayStation Online IDs to apply for a pre-order reservation.
But not only are these reservations first-come-first-serve, those who are successful are not even guaranteed a pre-order console, which Sony says are of “limited quantity”. Sonysaidthe reservations will awarded based on “previous interests and PlayStation activities.”
If successful, each invitation will be open for a limited time, with successful applicants limited to the below quantities of hardware:
The system will no doubt disappoint many who can’t get a reservation, and then disappoint those who do but then are not successful in getting a console when they go up for pre-order. Sony knows that the PS5 will be phenomenally popular, so it is bound to be frustrating to some fans the company is opting to suggest there is a scarcity of consoles.
Then again, given the coronavirus pandemic, Sony may have no choice. If the pandemic has meant production of the consoles has been slow then it may have to resort to stalling tactics such as this reservation system in order to get some consoles sold while supply catches up with demand.
