This is the OnePlus TV remote

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, posted a tweettoday with a picture of the remote control forthe upcoming OnePlus TV. It didn’t take long for us, and the rest of tech Twitter, to notice a slight visual similarity between it and a certainApple TV remote.

OK, OK. We know that all modern smartphones basically copied the iPhone. Hell, even Steve Jobs once agreed that good artists borrow but great artists steal. But OnePlus really has just coloured in the black Apple remote silver and changed some of the button functions.

The OnePlus TV remote appears to have Android navigation buttons, which makes sense seeing as the TV will run on the Android platform. There’s also a Google Assistant button and a button with the OnePlus logo on it which we aren’t sure about.

But the design is clearly lifted from Apple, a curious choice given the Apple TV remote is quite, well, bad. It makes it more difficult to navigate the UI if anything, so we hope the OnePlus similarities are purely aesthetic.

We can see a USB-C port on the bottom so at least it is rechargeable and the rocker on the side is hopefully a volume rocker, something Amazon took forever to add to its Fire TV remotes.

A remote is a remote is a remote – but this one is pushing it. Let’s hope the OnePlus TV is a killer product.
