What is the Dyson Micro – and should you buy it?
Dyson has officially launched its smallest, lightest cordless cleaner: the Micro. Although it’s not as powerful as more recent V series vacuum cleaners such as the V11 and V15 Detect, it’s been optimised for efficient cleaning at its size.
When is the Micro’s release date?
The Micro was officially released on 4 June in the UK. It’s available tobuy from Dyson UK.
You can alsobuy it in the US. It’s not yet available in Australia.
How much does the Dyson Micro cost?
In the UK, the Micro is priced at£299.99. This means it’s one of Dyson’s most affordable cordless cleaners. It costs the same as Dyson’s 2017 release, the V7. TheV7 Absoluteis still available to buy from the site for £299.99.
In the US, it costs$399.99. This puts it at the same price point asthe Omni-glideandthe V8 Animal.
What are the Dyson Micro’s features?
At 1.5kg (3.3lbs), the Micro is Dyson’s lightest vacuum cleaner, at almost half the weight of the Dyson V11 (2.97kg/ 6.5lbs) and two-thirds of the V7.
It measures 70.1 x 24.3 x 14.3cm (27.6 x 9.6 x 5.6in), which makes it shorter and slimmer than the V series of cordless cleaners. Its fluffy cleaning head is 45% smaller than that of a regular Dyson, allowing it to vacuum in tight spots.
This suggests that it’s aimed at a similar spot in the market tothe Omni-glide: it’s designed to answer a need for a light, easy-to-use cordless that’s good for smaller homes or quick clean-ups. It’s even lighter than the Omni-glide, which weighs in at 1.9kg (4.18lbs).
Both vacuums have abandoned the familiar V series trigger (which needs to be held down during operation) in favour of two buttons: an On/Off and a power boost. Unlike the Omni-glide, however, the Micro retains the series’ familiar point-and-shoot style grip and flat battery.
The Micro’s fluffy cleaning head is optimised to vacuum right up to its edges.
But the Micro’s slimness and lightness comes at a price. With only 50AW (air watts) of suction, it’s a far cry from the V11, which has 185AW in Boost mode. Even the V7 has 100AW of suction in its MAX power mode, although it has only 21AW in its ordinary cleaning mode – so the Micro may beat it for day-to-day cleaning.
The Micro also has a maximum run time of 20 minutes of fade-free suction (in its standard cleaning mode). This drops down to just 5 minutes in power mode. It charges in 3.5 hours.
Its bin capacity is also seriously reduced, down to 0.2 litres (0.04 gallons). The V7 has a 0.54 litre capacity (0.14 gallons), while the V11 has 0.76l (0.2 gallons). Still, the dustbin has hands-free dust removal and it and its filter are completely washable.
Which accessories come with the Micro?
In the UK, the Micro ships with its main cleaning head (the small fluffy soft roller), a mini-motorised tool, a combination brush/ crevice nozzle, docking station and charger.
In the US, it comes with the aforementioned tools and accessories, as well as the light crevice tool (which illuminates hard to reach areas) and a worktop tool, which is designed to pick up countertop crumbs.
It’s possible that the Micro will come with different accessories if it launches in other territories.
Should you buy the Micro?
